Welcome to Mrs. Janes' 3rd grade website!

A little bit about M.J.
I have been teaching at MES for 19 years, and taught 2 years in Glenwood, IL prior to that. I graduated from Eastern Illinois University and received a Master's degree from Olivet Nazarene University in Curriculum and Instruction. My husband and I have a 12 year old daughter and a 10 year old son who are sweet and silly all at the same time. I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, watching my kids in their sports activities, playing with our puppy, Skyler, and reading and writing stories in my free time. Lastly, I absolutely love being a teacher at MES!
Goals for my students:

Goals for my students:
- that they create positive relationships with their peers
- that they will work hard and never give up
- that they believe in their ability to learn and succeed
- that they have fun learning so that they love learning for years to come.

Classroom Rules & Expectations:
Classroom Rules
Must be followed at all times by all students
1. Be kind and respectful to ALL others
2. Listen to and follow all adult directions
3. Keep your hands, feet and objects to yourself
4. Try your BEST
Classroom Management Plan
The classroom management plan we will be using is a positive reward system involving the attached behavior chart. (See the photo on the side). The positive reward system basically allows the student to earn play money for good behavior and good academic work. There are 7 sections of student standards, which provides a visual and tactile cue for students. Each student has his/her name printed on a clothespin, which is put on the middle, green square on the behavior chart daily. If one rule is broken the student moves his/her name to the yellow square, then to orange and finally red if there are repeated offenses /and or if there is a severe issue. Likewise, if students go above and beyond with their good behavior and good effort, they may have an opportunity to move up a level. When a child stays on the 1st green or above by the end of the day they will have earned a dollar for that day.
We will use yellow and red money. The yellow dollars are given out for good behavior. Yellow money may be earned through: properly completing classroom jobs, acts of kindness, keeping quiet in the hallways and simply maintaining good behavior. Red dollars may be earned through good academic work such as grades from quizzes and tests, completing homework, and completing extra reading log entries.
The students will use their play money to purchase a variety of items at our classroom “store.” The store consists of educational materials, games, toys, and possibly popsicles. It is “open” once a month. There will be absolutely no weapons of any kind available at the store. (IE: swords, squirt guns etc…) All toys must be brought home that day unless otherwise instructed.
In addition to the money, students may earn tickets (from the Make Everyone Shine school-wide positive behavior management system), stickers, special privileges, and certificates.
Consequences
Will be enforced should a student choose to break a rule
1. Name is moved to yellow, loss of 50 cents
2. Name is moved to orange, loss of $1.00, loss of recess, note sent home
3. Name is moved to red, loss of $1.00, loss of recess, loss of store privileges (until further notice), note sent home, parents called, p/t conference set up
4. &/or Severe: Sent immediately to principal, parents called for a conference
My Expectations
I expect my students to:
1. Follow classroom and school-wide rules
2. Work cooperatively with staff and other students
3. Show up on time, prepared for school
4. Complete all assignments by their due dates
5. Try their best on all projects, tests, homework etc…

Academic Information & Grading
Mokena Elementary has adopted a standards-based grading report card on a trimester cycle. Students will be graded within a 1, 2, 3 scale. More information on this process and specifics will be communicated to parents via the MES office. Thank you in advance for keeping an open mind and being patient with this paradigm shift.
Grades will be posted on our district's Skyward program. You should've received a password from the office regarding this. Please expect grades to only be updated once a week.
